Nitey nite, don't let the you-know-what bite...

By now you must have seen the memo from Stillman Management regarding bed bugs. It started, "Please be advised that Building #3 has bed bug activity." Great. Except that the management company and the board (and the residents of building #3) already knew about this problem at least two months ago. I only heard about this problem because I happened to be at the board meeting that evening for an unrelated issue.

I sat there and I heard the plight of the residents in Building #3 - it was awful. After 15 minutes, I raised my hand. "Is any other building at risk for contracting bed bugs?" Highly unlikely was the reply. Yet here we are and these urgent inspections must be completed on Friday.

When I was in the board room a couple of months ago, they had a company specializing in bed bug extermination. They must have failed because here comes the company with the trained dogs. What scares me is that I was ASSURED that there is no issue with washing my clothes in the laundry room. Well, call me crazy but there's no way that I am going to ever wash my clothes in the laundry room. Again. I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Some questions that I had at the time; that I in fact still have:
  1. When was building #3 first discovered to have contracted bed bugs?
  2. If this is NOW a "very serious problem," according to the memo, then why didn't the board and management alert residents of buildings 1 or 2 when building #3 was found to have bed bugs?
  3. Why didn't we do an inspection of buildings 1 and 2 - at that time - as a precaution?
Expenses that you can expect to occur if your unit contracts bed bugs can run into the THOUSANDS of dollars. This isn't exactly a small issue so please be vigilant.
