Eight Units and Counting...

Since it seems that getting ANY information from the co-op about the bed bug problem, let me give you a report as of 12pm today. There are a total of AT LEAST EIGHT units in building #2 that were tested and came up positive with bed bugs.

I will repeat an earlier question from a previous post.

WHY WASN'T THE ENTIRE BUILDING NOTIFIED?
WHY weren't ALL buildings notified?
WAS it really safe to use the laundry room when there were confirmed cases in building 3?
WHY was there only a meeting for the building 3 residents when the problem was confirmed?

The first thing that should have been done is that every single resident of the co-op should have been notified ASAP. That is just communications 101.

Since there has been ZERO communications from the board or the management company, here are some helpful links about bed bugs. Also, if you have not done so already, go out and get a bed bug repellent mattress cover. I am going to get one from Bed Bath and Beyond. It's a really good one and it's called
Allergy Luxe Bed Bug Barrier Bedding. I'll let you know the details once I buy the cover.

In the meantime, here's a story from Crain's NY Business. Also, here's a helpful story on how to spot and prevent the spread of bedbugs. There's also a video on MSNBC that was informational but not for the sqeemish.

In the meantime, be vigilant and let's hope that the people that run this joint are doing a better job at getting rid of the problem than they are communicating about it!

Nitey nite, don't let the you-know-what bite...

By now you must have seen the memo from Stillman Management regarding bed bugs. It started, "Please be advised that Building #3 has bed bug activity." Great. Except that the management company and the board (and the residents of building #3) already knew about this problem at least two months ago. I only heard about this problem because I happened to be at the board meeting that evening for an unrelated issue.

I sat there and I heard the plight of the residents in Building #3 - it was awful. After 15 minutes, I raised my hand. "Is any other building at risk for contracting bed bugs?" Highly unlikely was the reply. Yet here we are and these urgent inspections must be completed on Friday.

When I was in the board room a couple of months ago, they had a company specializing in bed bug extermination. They must have failed because here comes the company with the trained dogs. What scares me is that I was ASSURED that there is no issue with washing my clothes in the laundry room. Well, call me crazy but there's no way that I am going to ever wash my clothes in the laundry room. Again. I'd rather err on the side of caution.

Some questions that I had at the time; that I in fact still have:
  1. When was building #3 first discovered to have contracted bed bugs?
  2. If this is NOW a "very serious problem," according to the memo, then why didn't the board and management alert residents of buildings 1 or 2 when building #3 was found to have bed bugs?
  3. Why didn't we do an inspection of buildings 1 and 2 - at that time - as a precaution?
Expenses that you can expect to occur if your unit contracts bed bugs can run into the THOUSANDS of dollars. This isn't exactly a small issue so please be vigilant.

Where Have All the (Useful) Stores Gone?

Is it just me, or is PM Pediatrics and J.W. Tumbles the two WORST stores that could occupy the Applebees block? It was great when KB Mart was there because if you needed milk or a bagel or an extension cord (they sold EVERYTHING there) you could just pop right downstairs.

Now, unless you have kids ages 6-12, those stores might as well be empty.  I mean, what use do we have for those stores?  When the Dress Barn closed, I was hopeful.  When the KB Mart went bye-bye, I once again got my hopes up.  I guess the landlord could not say no - not for the rent that she allegedly demanded from the Kims and assumably got from J.W. Tumbles.

And one last thing: do you think PM Pediatrics is hoping for a bunch of tumbling and falling and skinned knees and crying at J.W. Tumbles?

Communication

Welcome to the inaugural Evelyn Court Blog post!

Let me first say that the current board of directors is doing a fine job. If there is one area that can use improvement, it is the communication of the board with members of the co-op. The Evelyn Court Board of Directors need to collectively do a better job of communicating with shareholders.

I was sick of just receiving a memo every now and then. I have decided to start this blog to hopefully improve two way communications between the Board and shareholders.

Here I will post useful information and photos, news on Evelyn Court, and talk about issues that affect the co-op, and by extension, our lives. We'll also keep it lively: polls, spotlights on shareholders, "Meet the New Neighbor" features, reviews on new restaurants and stores that open in the area, contacting local government officials, and more.

Spread the word about the blog at the annual shareholder meeting on TUESDAY, MARCH 3 at 7:30 p.m.

Roland
